Lou Vukas is a native of northwest Indiana, from a working-class community directly outside of the city of Chicago, IL, and a top graduate from the "school of hard knocks."

He grew up and graduated from high school in a small Indiana town, and went on to pursue college studies at various universities throughout the state. During that time he had worked various jobs, from sandblasting to labor and construction work, to finally realize that being the standard employee wasn't for him.
Fresh out of high school Lou started his real estate ventures by simply ordering programs and books shown on late-night TV infomercials, all dealing with real estate-related topics as well as other areas of investing including commodities and stock trading. As his library and knowledge grew, he took to opening up various small businesses to fund his self-studies. The spectrum ran from chimney sweeping to laying asphalt to eventually opening up his own private mortgage company in 1997 while at the same time working on rehabbing homes and flipping them in the area.
He went through enough bad experiences as a young investor - being talked down on, being taken advantage of through "big businesses" and having trouble being taken seriously to the point where he eventually decided to forget trying to start his ventures the way that was giving him the most trouble...and start doing things his own way. Never having much patience for corporate American-style, he developed his own system that began with rehabbing homes and led to him owning and managing over 30 properties before the age of 27.
